Lecture Three
January 15, 2007
Well I think I’m starting to understand something now…
The topics discussed in class about business moving from “silos” to “networks” made a lot of sense to me. I’m not sure if its my personality or simply my generation, but I must admit I prefer living in a world concentrated around networks rather than silos. I don’t have much capital, but I do have time and a brain so I can come up with, and then implement an idea in the new knowledge economy.
The knowledge economy is truly the economy of the masses. There has never been a time when the average individual has had so much information and does not require huge amounts of capital to turn an idea into a money making venture. This has to be good for the individual, the consumer, and society.
If the future is now, then we all have the ability to mould our destinies!
Communities of Practice?
I’m struggling with this concept. I feel as though I’m missing something here. In my understanding, the Soci245 blog is a community of practice. It is a group of people coming together “who engage in a process of collective learning in a shared domain of human endeavour”
Am I on the right track? Comments please

I agree that the abundance of accessible information is great. What do you think of the relationship between the knowledge economy and, as David suggested, the need for a physical economy? Are we creating a more palpable rich/poor divide? I think, BTW, that you are on track about the community of practice.

Is putting a bunch of people in one space ( virtual or physical) enough to make them a Community of Practice? have they negotiated their field of practice? true they all have something in common – they are all enrolled in the course which implies a mutual interest? but is this a practice?
Are strategies for blogging and sharing your blog practices? – me thinks yes
any other practices you can think of ?????

I wonder if there needs to be a point, as was orchestrated in the last lab, where there is agreement to set a field of practice, or if this is something that is evolving. I suppose it must be a mixture of both, that there are always defining points in a community, be it virtual or otherwise. A community of practice does suggest a mutual direction toward a particular practice though doesn’t it, be it openly negotiated or evolutional. Negotiated tone, content and form of posts/ responses may also constitute practic (ethics and practicalities). Though we have yet to come to an agreement about the form, i.e. what may constitute a new thread to save on time/space/ avoid irrelevancies if there are such things. But I think these things may be left to evolve unless issues arrise, it is hard/ possibly counter-productive to try to set the parameters too tight.

Below is a blog I found using tags (http://marvinmartian.wordpress.com/2007/01/30/another-place-to-complain/). It has some good links to UGC sites. I found this using the tag “communities” Nice!
Another place to complain
In a previous post I mentioned a website called Gripefruit in which you can submit any complaint you might have. I now found another website called B*SH. It is a little more simplified but it generally is the same thing. I have links for both websites here on my blog.

This course has really got me thinking about the fact that capital is not now essential in order to suceed and make it big. You stated that the knowledge economy is truly the economy of the masses, and that there has never been a time when the average individual has had so much information and does not require huge amounts of capital to turn an idea into a money making venture. It got me thinking about the program the universtiy runs called ‘Entre’ this is an organisation run by students through the uni which aims to inspire young entrepreneurs at the uni to consider how their ideas and innovations could be transformed into sucessful business ventures. It encourages students to get out there as entreprenuers opposed to working the traditional labour jobs. These days there is just so much more opportunity to make it as an entreprenuer. Then I got thinking about how many people I know of who have finished uni with a degree but have taken not applyed for jobs but rather are trying to set up their own business based from ideas that they have. These people dont have huge capital (most of them are probably in huge debt with their student loans) but like you said in your blog paddyrick they you have a brain and time to come up with and idea, and then they can implement idea’s in the new knowledge economy.

Bush is forever saying that democracies do not invade other countries and start wars. Well, he did just that. He invaded Iraq, started a war, and killed people. What do you think? Why has bush turned our country from a country of hope and prosperity to a country of belligerence and fear.
Are we safer today than we were before?
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!
